Abu Dhabi Airports host port authorities for Midfield Terminal Project tour

Feb 08, 2017: Abu Dhabi Airports’ executive management took a team from the General Authority for the Security of Ports, Borders and Free Zones for tour of the Midfield Terminal Project.

The group spent an hour and half walking around the 742,000 square metre structure. Starting in the baggage reclaim hall, which will house ten carousels, the group moved into the area housing the baggage handling system, which is nearly fully installed. Currently 27 kilometre of conveyor belt have been put into place, with just one more left to add to complete the 28 kilometre belt, which will be capable of handling up to 19,200 bags per hour.

In the impressive center of the terminal, the central processor, the group saw how the hotel and office areas are taking shape, under the vast 18 steel arches supporting the roof structure, the largest of which is 180 metre wide and 52 metre high.

They also moved further into the building to see the spaces allocated for duty free and food and beverage, and one of the four piers that is nearing completion.

Acting CEO Abdul Majeed Al Khoori, commented, “We are working hand in hand with various entities to achieve our aspired goals; and inviting our partners from the General Authority for the Security of Ports, Borders and Free Zones today to witness the progress made in the construction and the fit out, strengthens the sense of partnership as we get ready to operate this magnificent piece infrastructure together.”

When complete, the MTB (Midfield Terminal Building), along with the existing terminals at Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH), will serve the increasing number of passengers who fly through the UAE capital each year – a number expected to surpass 45 million within the next ten years.
