BIAL to use Autodesk BIM 360 for design and construction of Terminal 2

July 9, 2018: Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) – operator of the BLR Airport – has identified Autodesk BIM 360 (Building Information Modeling) as the design and planning platform for construction of Terminal 2 (T2).

This platform will ensure that the entire team is able to access information – from design, fabrication, and construction to operations and maintenance – to make informed decisions from a common point of understanding. BLR Airport is the first infrastructure project in the country that will be designed, built and operated across the project lifecycle using an intelligent 3D Design construction technology.

“As part of our digital transformation, BIAL will look to leverage the full extent of digital design under the Autodesk suite from design to on-site construction, asset and facilities management. BIM will enable us to develop new and innovative infrastructure, thereby setting new benchmarks. We are proud to be early adopters – not just in India, but the world. Terminal 2 at the BLR Airport will be the first infrastructure project in the country to integrate a full BIM lifecycle for the entire project lifecycle,” said Tom Shimmin, chief project officer, BIAL.

The tender for the construction of T2 has been rolled out to select construction groups, inviting bids for the project that must be submitted by August 30, 2018. The mega T2 project will be built in phases with Phase 1, covering 255,000 square metres, expected to be operational by March 31, 2021. The first phase of this terminal will cater to 25 million passengers per annum (MPPA), while the second phase of Terminal 2 – still in planning stage - will be built for an additional 20 MPPA. Once operational, the combined capacity of both terminals will be 70 MPPA.

"With an aggressive timeline, it is important for us to track our progress to accomplish strategic and operational goals in terms of value and time management. We aren’t just creating a new terminal, but also value for people. Autodesk BIM 360 is an essential tool for BIAL to deliver this super megaproject,” Shimmin added.

From design collaboration, documentation and reviews, to pre-construction, and through quality and safety and operations, Autodesk BIM 360 connects the people, data and workflows in construction projects. With hundreds of people working on the site each day, communication at scale is key. BIM 360 will enable all the parties to review the master model, see each other’s concerns; clashing elements; inaccurate or missing design elements; and critical zones both for coordination and installation.

Commenting on this development, Sunil MK, Head of Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) at Autodesk, India & SAARC said, “With this mandate, BIAL is steering a much-needed transformation in the approach towards massive infrastructure projects in India and we are very excited to support them. Autodesk BIM 360 Platform will be used by BIAL to design -Build- operate BIAL’s new passenger terminal, Terminal 2. With this implementation, the Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru will be the first airport project and the first infrastructure project in India to use BIM through the entire process of Design-Build-Operate.”

He further added, “Globally, many developed countries including US, UK, Germany, Singapore, UAE have mandated BIM in buildings and infrastructure projects which has led to better construction efficiency, lower cost and lesser negative impact on the environment. It is the right time for India to adopt this industry best practice to realize the country’s vision in infrastructure development. ”
