June 26, 2018: Union civil aviation minister Suresh Prabhu has informed that the ministry is working on a cargo policy, which will increase movement of cargo by airlines. To enhance the movement of air cargo, some of the cargo like perishables, would play a key role.
”Currently, the ministry is working on a cargo policy which will be enabling movement of cargo. I am also responsible for logistics as a subject which, for the first time has been earmarked to the commerce ministry. The cost of cargo movement is very critical for succeeding in global trade as well as domestic competitiveness,” he said.
Accordingly, the ministry is also working out with some countries which had signed agreement with India to export food and vegetables. "We have 380 million tonnes of agriculture production and 400 million tonnes of horticulture production. Despite being the second largest producer of food and vegetable, we lose 30 percent of it before it reaches the market place. If some part of them is exported, we can have significant increase in the income of the farmers and it would be good for the economy,” he said.
