May 24, 2019: Hyper-smart Container 42, which left for its first leg of a two-year data-collecting mission around the world, will make its first stop at the Transport Logistic 2019 in Munich this June.

It will be stationed from June 4-7 near the eastern entrance to the fair hall where experts from the Port of Rotterdam Authority and the participating partners will update attendees on digital and technological. The exercise is part of Rotterdam’s effort toward digital transformation of port and logistics activities.

Container 42 will record what kinds of things a container shipment goes through when it is shipped by sea or overland. It houses an array of sensors and communications equipment “that can measure changes in parameters like vibration, slope, position, sound, local air pollution, humidity and temperature. The unit has also been fitted with solar panels, which can be used to determine how much power a container can generate during a given journey by ship, train or truck.”

The collected data provides insight into the challenges faced during transport and logistics, and real-time information can help users gauge local infrastructure among other things. The Port Authority uses a cloud-based platform to collect and process data coming in from sensors installed throughout the port area.
