In a significant development for India’s drone logistics industry, Skye Air Mobility has launched the country’s first all-women drone delivery team, setting a standard for gender inclusion in aviation and logistics. This initiative, showcased in a special demonstration in Gurugram, saw a team of 10 women drone pilots and Skye Walkers executing seamless end-to-end deliveries, handling everything from piloting to last-mile distribution. The event, held ahead of International Women’s Day, represents a significant step in an industry that has been traditionally male-dominated.

Despite advancements, the representation of women in drone aviation remains low globally, with data from the FAA indicating that only 6.7% of licensed drone pilots in the United States of America were women as of 2019. However, India is aiming to accelerate female participation, with Skye Air Mobility committing to training 500 women drone pilots and Skye Walkers over the next two years.

Ankit Kumar, Founder & CEO of Skye Air Mobility, stated: “At Skye Air Mobility, we believe that innovation thrives in inclusivity. By training 500 women drone pilots, we are ensuring that the future of logistics is not just automated, but also diverse and led by women. This initiative is not just about training women to fly drones—it’s about reshaping the entire logistics industry and proving that women can lead in every sector.”

The development is part of India’s evolving logistics landscape, where drone technology is gaining traction in both urban and rural last-mile deliveries. In July 2024, DTDC, in partnership with Skye Air Mobility, introduced drone-based delivery services, reflecting the industry’s growing focus on automation and faster logistics solutions. At the same time, government-backed initiatives like ‘Namo Drone Didi’ are empowering rural women by training them as drone pilots, creating new employment opportunities beyond major cities and expanding the reach of drone-based logistics.

With urban logistics evolving rapidly, Gurugram alone recorded 1.5 million drone deliveries in February 2025, demonstrating the increasing reliance on drone-based transportation for e-commerce and essential goods. As Skye Air Mobility and other logistics players continue to integrate drone deliveries into their supply chains, the role of women in this high-tech sector is poised to expand significantly.

As India advances in drone technology for logistics, initiatives like Skye Air Mobility’s all-women drone delivery team mark a shift toward a more inclusive and technology-driven industry. With growing reliance on drone-based transportation for e-commerce and essential goods, the demand for skilled pilots is set to rise.

By investing in training programmes and breaking industry stereotypes, companies and government-backed initiatives are not only improving operational efficiency but also reshaping the workforce. As more women take leadership roles in drone logistics, their impact on the future of India’s supply chain will be both transformative and indispensable.
