Read how 3-D softwares help Delhi-Mumbai DFC to cut through Aravalli Hills

February 12, 2020: Larsen & Toubro (L&T) is using the 3-D modelling softwares of Bentley Systems for the ongoing second phase construction of 128-kilometre rail between Rewari and Dadri of Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) that pass through the ecologically sensitive zone of Aravalli Hills.

Situated in the northwestern part of India, 692-kilometre Aravalli Hills is an environmentally sensitive mountain range passes through Gujarat-Rajasthan-Haryana-Delhi.

The second phase construction of corridor passes through the regions of Rewari-Alwar-Mewat-Gurgaon-Palwal-Faridabad and GB Nagar in the states of Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh and is expected to complete by March 2021.

“Bentley software helped L&T achieve its vision of digitalization and implementation of Building Information Modeling (BIM) to enable designers, planners, and implementers to use a single repository for the free flow of accurate information and a collaborative way of working through the process of designing, delivering, and maintaining physical assets,” said Nikhil Jose, assistant engineering manager-civil, L&T.

Aravalli Hills
Situated in the northwestern part of India, 692-kilometre Aravalli Hills is an environmentally sensitive mountain range passes through Gujarat-Rajasthan-Haryana-Delhi.

Delhi-Mumbai DFC
The 1483-kilometre WDFC between India’s political capital Delhi and financial capital Mumbai is expected to reduce the unit cost of transportation and quadruple the current average freight speed from 20 kilometres an hour, introducing timetabled freight services and tripling container capacity from 5,000 to 15,000 tons.

Mountain challenges
In this work through Aravalli Hills, L&T faced many environmental and technical challenges, including difficult & inaccessible terrain, ground stability concerns in slopes & embankments, and optimizing horizontal & vertical alignments. The route crosses terrain requiring a vertical alignment with a maximum cut depth of 25 to 30 meters, plus a viaduct and tunnel.

Software solutions
OpenRail ConceptStation, OpenRail Designer, ContextCapture, OpenBuildings Designer and LumenRT are the few softwares used by L&T to solves these problems.

OpenRail ConceptStation, that creates designs of rail, electrification, tunnel, & bridge and ContextCapture, that creates reality models using drone surveys, helped L&T to explore two route options by understanding the surrounding terrain and infrastructure and visualizing the potential challenges it could encounter during construction.

OpenRail Designer that creates 3D modelling environment for streamlined project delivery of rail network assets, allowed L&T to compare different scenarios to help simplify logistics, reduce cost, and create a safe environment for site personnel during construction.

While asset tagging in ‘OpenBuildings Designer’, a multidiscipline building design software, afforded the team a smooth and consistent interface between design and site operations, ‘LumenRT’ ensured the integration of lifelike animations.

“These animations helped personnel with non-engineering backgrounds to understand the scope of works and how the project might impact them. At all times and throughout the different stages of the project, Bentley applications helped L&T to reduce costs and optimize its resources – machinery, materials, and manpower – as well as provide a better understanding to stakeholders and achieve greater client satisfaction,” says the Bentley release.
