December 20, 2019: Harjeet Kaur Joshi took charge as the 13th chairperson and managing director of Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) and became the first female to head the shipping company.
The appointment was confirmed by the appointments committee of the cabinet in October after the Public Enterprises Selection Board picked her to lead India’s largest shipping company.
Harjeet Kaur has been the finance director at SCI and also has been holding the additional charge of the chairperson and managing director since September after Capt. Anoop Kumar Sharma who led the company for three years left the position vacant.
She took the charge, when the finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman has already announced the government’s plan to sell its 63.75 percent ownership in the company.
Pursuant to the appointment order of MOS, Mrs. H. K. Joshi has assumed charge as Chairperson & Managing Director of SCI on 19.12.2019 due to which she has become the first woman to be at the helm of affairs of India’s largest and most diversified shipping company. pic.twitter.com/vpjDrPRdNu
