Chennai-Jaffna flight service resumes after 41 years
November 11, 2019: Alliance Air, the subsidiary of Air India, today announced its maiden overseas flight with the commencement of the 90-minutes thrice-a-week flight operations from Chennai Airport to Jaffna, the northern city of Sri Lanka.
November 11, 2019: Alliance Air, the subsidiary of Air India, today announced its first-ever overseas flight with commencement of the 90-minutes thrice-a-week flight operations from Chennai Airport to Jaffna, the northern city of Sri Lanka. The flights will operate on every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

India had flight service to Jaffna until the late 1970s before the beginning of civil war in the island country after which it was used for military operations. While Domestic services from the airport was resumed in 2002, in October 2019 it was renamed as Jaffna International Airport and welcomed the first international aircraft of Alliance Air from Chennai.
